Creating Minimalist Style in Your Home with the Three C'sPosted 14/10/2015
When the world around you is ruled by the media and advertising, sometimes you need a place to get away from the frantic pace of modern life and just enjoy the simple things. Minimalism isn’t about cold, white, impractical interiors and uncomfortable angular furniture; it’s about enjoying what you have. “Quality, not quantity” is the guiding principle of a minimalist lifestyle. Creating minimalist style in your home can give you more space, more freedom, and less to worry about. If you want to give it a try, then you’ll need to follow the Three C’s – the rules of minimalism even the most creative designer has to obey.

Colour
White opens up a space, reflecting natural light and making a room seem bigger. It’s like a blank canvas, meaning you can add a pop of colour in your furniture and decorations. But minimalism isn’t just about white. It’s about creating a cool, calm feel and a sense of space. White is perfect for this, but you can do it with any colour, so long as it’s from a muted palette that doesn’t steal your attention. Black and grey works, and so do neutral tones. Don’t be afraid to tone your décor down.

Clutter
We don’t normally realise how much stuff has accumulated inside our homes until we’re moving house and can’t fit it all into the delivery van. Have a look around. Go into your junk drawers, your kitchen cupboards, your wardrobe. Clear your kitchen counters, get rid of the toys your kids don’t play with any more. Most of us find it hard to let anything go, but it’s worth recognising the things we need and the things that would benefit someone else more – or should really be banished to the rubbish bin. You’ll be amazed when you’re finished.

Clean lines
Crisp, clean lines are a key part of minimalist style. Avoid fuss and frills, and invest in furniture that’s simple and stylish. Go for blinds, not curtains, for an effortless finish. Keep carpets neutral, and install a smart wood floor for great wear and versatility. You only need a few standout items to really make an impact. A glass coffee table, an oversized vase, a Perspex chair – it says everything you need to say without overpowering your space.
